Who doesn’t love a smock for keeping kids clothing mess free at meal times? This smock fits from approximately 6 - 24 months and is perfect for little ones learning and exploring food.
The basic version of the Speedy Smock is made from one single piece of fabric! Just cut out, bind and add some snaps. Perfect nap time project :)
This pattern features:
- Roomy sleeves to fit easily over clothing
- Short or long sleeves
- Straight front or a food catcher pocket*
- Either a visible or hidden binding
- Cased elastic cuffs to make sure you have a snug fit around the wrists
*Just like our free bib pattern, this smock can be made with an optional fold up pocket at the bottom that catches the food that is inevitably dropped. Snaps are used to hold the pocket in place, so emptying any extras out of the pocket is a breeze, simply unsnap over the bin. Perfect for baby-led weaning. (This version required 2 pieces of fabric)
••If you really dislike binding, check out the fully lined hack on the blog. This is also great if you like the combination of an absorbent fabric backed with a waterproof fabric, or want a reversible smock.
Fabric choices:
- Polyurethane laminate (PUL),
- pre-laminated minky,
- coated cotton,
- top coat poly (TCP)
- or, PEACHSKIN! Yes, you read it correctly, boardshort fabric makes fabulous summertime smocks. It is water resistant, much more breathable, dries super fast, and the best part is no sticky laminated backing. Making it much more comfortable when you have minimal or no clothing on.
You could also substitute with absorbent fabrics like toweling (maybe recycle an old towel?), or a mid-weight woven if thats what you have in your stash.
This pattern is trimless - just overlap and stick. It also contains a border line if you prefer to trim your pages. Best of both worlds!
